This lovely old heart shaped Victorian brooch is hand carved from genuine tortoise shell, pre-ban era. The center has a Pacific Cat's Eye shell or operculum which is part of many shelled animals. The Operculum from a species of sea snail called the Turban Shell is eye-like with a natural cabochon shape. This jewelry was popular in Victorian Era Britain. It's a wonderful piece to add to your collection with lots of history and interest.
The pin mechanism itself is made of brass and set securely with pins through to the front. When held to the light, the yellow part of the brooch is quite transparent. Measures 1 3/4 inch each way. In excellent condition, notice when turned sideways you can actually see the carving. Beautiful!
