They are dyed and made to look like wood but you cannot pierce them with a pin and I really can't test accurately due to the dye. Each clip is slightly different, hand carved and not out of a mold. Asian looking, due to their size I believe them to be dress clips, but they could also be used for shoes depending on their design. They measure 1-1/2" X 1". Very good condition with patina to the brass.
